Life changes dramatically over night as a result of an amputation. Losing a limb can turn your world upside down physically and emotionally. The people around you may continue on as normal when you no longer can. While support from family and friends remain invaluable, they may not be able to fully identify, relate, or understand what is happening in your life. For the amputee themselves there will be many questions, concerns, fears, and unknowns that will take time to resolve. It can leave one feeling very alone on the road they're on.
Due to an infection in his foot, my brother Brian lost his right leg below the knee in July 2022 and it led him to this road. While his support system was strong, he felt alone in the quest for answers. How and when to use an array of assistive devices most effectively, how to maintain the health and skin integrity of the stump, how to establish a new daily routine and new normal, and how to learn to drive again and reestablish independence.
The MARC website is an essential resource for both amputees and their supporters to gather not only the answers and information being sought but to do it in ways that are safe and utilize the right connections. Creating both personal and professional ties to those who are committed to this journey through either lived experience or service to others is imperative and we are thankful for the existence of such a network.
